Education is our national priority. A properly educated nation can generate better societal and economic values, and contribute to the prosperity of the country. The growing quality-driven trend at all levels will raise the bar of satisfaction of all stakeholders. People are the most important part of any organization. Under this simple philosophy, Quality Management system emphasizes people management practices as its foundation for achieving high quality products and services. The ISO certification process focuses on institutions working toward improving quality education through continuous improvement and meeting quality standards. In addition to implementing a continuous improvement culture, it is also important for an organization to pay serious attention to certain elements critical in supporting a successful TQM implementation. These elements include top management commitment, customer focus, supplier quality management, benchmarking, performance monitoring, employee empowerment, employee involvement, teamwork and employee training. We should be working as a team to inform, respond to and, with partners, take forward quality assurance to meet new demands and enhanced expectations.
We are proud to be an ISO-certified institution, but we will not be satisfied if it stays on papers. Therefore, the next step would be the implementation of the system and upgrading to a higher level. Quality is everybody business by complying with the system standards. Effective implementation of ISO 9001 quality standards by educational institutions can play a key role in fulfilling requirements and exceeding expectations.
The Department of Restorative Dental Sciences (RDS) started its existence during the founding of the College of Dentistry in 1975G (1395H). It is committed to its mission to provide unparalleled dental education to our undergraduate and postgraduate students. The Department provides a pre-doctoral instruction in the disciplines of dental anatomy and occlusion, dental materials, treatment planning, operative dentistry and endodontics. The RDS Department has eight undergraduate courses offered to both male and female sites.
The Department encompasses three Divisions:
1) Division of Operative Dentistry - which is planned to provide pre-clinical dental students with the basic knowledge and skills required for the training of operative dentistry. This course starts with a brief introduction of operative dentistry and dental morphology, followed by the discussion of instruments used and laboratory excercises. The pathology, clinical presentation and restoration of teeth with complex cavities are discussed.
2) Division of Endodontics – which covers etiology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the dental pulp. The learning sessions include lectures, demonstrations and hands-on instruction in all clinical and laboratory procedures related to the practice of endodontic therapy.
3) Division of Dental Biomaterials – which is involved in different aspects of materials sciences necessary for enriching and understanding the applications of various dental biomaterials. This division provides the basic foundation for proper learning of the applications of dental practice.
Moreover, a Division Head and Course Director for each specialty are assigned by the Department. Currently, the Department has forty-one professionals and high-caliber faculty members (Professors, Associate Professors, Assistant Professors, Lecturers and Demonstrators) participating and contributing their teaching abilities to our undergraduate and postgraduate students.
In addition, the Department sponsors an advanced educational program for the Saudi Board in Advance Restorative Dentistry which enrolls ten students annually. It links also with the Postgraduate Educational Program in Endodontics and Restorative Dentistry which usually accept four students for each specialty. The goal of these programs is to provide our graduate students to pursue several career possibilities, including specialty practice, research, or teaching, with the increased knowledge of the interrelationship in the field of clinical dentistry.
