About the Department of Oral Medicine & Diagnostic Sciences
Welcome to the Department of Oral Medicine & Diagnostic Sciences at the College of Dentistry, King Saud University. Our department plays a vital role in oral disease education, clinical training, scientific research, and community outreach.

Vision
To achieve regional leadership and global excellence in medical education, healthcare, and scientific research related to oral, facial, and maxillofacial diseases.

Mission
To provide high-quality education, innovative research, and distinguished clinical and community services in Oral Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences, preparing competent healthcare professionals who advance oral health locally and internationally.

Department Units
The department provides accurate and early diagnosis of oral diseases through three specialized units:

Oral Medicine Unit: Focused on diagnosing and managing non-dental oral conditions such as mucosal disorders (e.g., lichen planus, pemphigus vulgaris), oral ulcers, salivary gland diseases, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, temporomandibular joint disorders, and facial pain.

Oral Pathology & Microbiology Unit: Integrates clinical and pathological sciences to analyze tissue changes and diagnose benign and malignant tumors through biopsy examination, as well as inflammatory, immune-mediated, and genetic conditions.

Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology Unit: Utilizes advanced 3D imaging to support precise diagnosis of oral, head, and neck tumors, cysts, fractures, implant planning, TMJ disorders, and assessment of impacted or complex teeth.

Services

Medical Education:
The department contributes to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and offers specialized programs including:
• PhD in Science – Oral Medicine Track
• PhD in Science – Oral Radiology Track
• Saudi Board in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology

Clinical Care:
Provides comprehensive clinical consultation for patients with acute, chronic, and recurrent oral and maxillofacial conditions. The department also contributes to hospital and medical city activities, including policy development and clinical service planning.

Scientific Research & Innovation:
Encourages research within and outside the university, building local, regional, and international collaborations. The department also hosts an annual research conference for undergraduate students and residents.

Community Service:
Delivers up-to-date medical information on oral and maxillofacial diseases through media channels and educational materials, and participates in awareness campaigns such as World Oral Cancer Day, “Yaslam Fomak,” and World Oral Health Day.

The department continues to be a leader in research areas including early detection of oral cancer and the development of artificial intelligence technologies for oral disease diagnosis. It remains committed to community service through specialized clinics in oral medicine, head and neck radiology, and oral pathology at the University Medical City Dental Hospital.
